Notebooks

Good afternoon parents,

We have noticed a large amount of notebooks that are not being signed each day. Please read the reader with your child every night and then sign their notebook. It indicates to us who is completing their reading homework. It is really important for your child to read their book every day. It helps confirm the days learning with them. If you have any questions about how you can support your child reading at home or concerns please come and see us. Happy reading.

Thanks, Dana and Jaimee

Maori Language Week

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa. Greetings to you all.
This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori /Māori Language Week!

In honour of Maori language week we will be using Maori commands and greeting in the classroom.

This afternoon to link in with our topic " What the ear can hear" we learnt about the action and word takahi, which means stomping. We learnt that the stomping of the legs is representing becoming one with the papatuanuku, the land. The aim of today was for the children to learn the correct way to sway and takahi in time to the music. An interesting fact, the takahi can differ between the tribes. To watch takahi occurring we watched videos of the All Blacks performing the haka. The boys in the class loved the experience, we practised stomping with the correct leg and correct hand position on our hips. If you would like to practise at home or for your child to show you please use watch the video below.

Music and art

This term our topic is " What does the ear hear?"
Part of this topic we will be listening to different types of music. This afternoon we listened to this piece of music called Jupiter by Gustav Holst, the children all listened to the piece of music and then discussed how the music made them feel. We danced and moved to the music to how it made us feel. We then painted pictures to relate to how we felt about the music. The children thought the music sounded like the following
A queen arriving , people getting married, a ballet, people dancing outside, a carriage arriving at a castle, stars at night, a war and star wars. Have a listen to the music and talk with your child about how it makes you feel.

Today we had a cultural shared lunch to celebrate Matariki. Each child brought in a plate of food from their culture to share with the class. We had a variety of different food including samosas, rotoitis, muffins, sushi, banana donuts, pita and humus, and biscuits. Thank you to all the parents who brought in food from your culture, it was delicious!
