Writing super stars
All the children are working so hard with their writing. One group was given a photograph and had to look at the picture and write indepdantly about what they saw, another group were practising their Casey shapes in their writing book and we were so impressed we had to show the class.
Dinosaur learning
Today one of the math groups were practising their counting and we used dinosaurs as our counters. We then played number bingo to 100!

Parent interviews
Hello parents,
Miss Pollock and I have noticed that a lot of the parents in the mornings are taking their child's books out of containers to have a look at them. We encourage you to look at your child's work if their book is out and on a table ready for the lesson not if the book is packed away in a container. We have over 155 books in circulation each week - reading, writing, handwriting, maths and poem books for each child, for our organisation and time management we would really appreciate you not taking the books out of the containers. If you would like to see your child's books or talk about their learning we have parent interviews coming up in week five. At Arahoe we have parent teacher discussions four times a term. We are unable to discuss your child's learning before school when children are arriving as this time is when we meet and greet parents and the students.
Our next parent teacher discussions will be held in Week Five on Monday the 18th and Tuesday the 19th of May. Bookings will open on the 11th of May. You can book through this website http://parentinterviews.co.nz/

Dictation
This week we have been focusing on dictation with the children in their small reading groups. We will say a sentence and the children have to write down the sentence, each sentence will have high frequency words and then harder words such as wheel, friend, blue. We are encouraging the children to listen for the phonemes individual sounds in these words and write them down. This is the second step to indepdant writing.

Litter free loyalty cards
At Arahoe a School we are changing the ways we deal with our rubbish to become more waste wise. Did you know last year we had a rubbish audit and we generated 26kg of rubbish a day?! To help reduce the rubbish in our school we have a litter free loyalty card system. If a child brings in a lunchbox that is litter free they stamp their loyalty card, after they have filled in their loyalty card 10 times they go into the monthly draw for some amazing Eco prizes. Last term children won bees wax lunch wrapper and honey. If you are interested in purchasing a bees wax lunch wrapper made using bees wax from our hives they cost $6.50 and you can order from the office. The bees wax lunch clothes are re-usable and a great thing to use to wrap fruit and sandwiches. Any questions please see mrs Turner.

Anzac Day
Today we were learning all about ANZAC day. We watched this great video to explain to the children why we celebrate ANZAC day in New Zealand. On Thursday Arahoe is having an ANZAC ceremony for all the children at school. We made a wreath this afternoon using cupcake holders and black paper to represent a poppy. We will lay our wreath over one of the white crosses on the field for our display.

Hello from Jaimee
Hi there!
My name is Jaimee Pollock and I will be teaching alongside Dana for the rest of the year beginning Term 2. I recently graduated from Laidlaw College with a Bachelor of Teaching and I am really excited to be joining such an amazing class of Year 1's!
I have two nephews and one niece whom I love spending time with. I particularly love the outdoors and my main hobbies are horse riding, netball, surfing and snowboarding. I also love reading and writing and I am looking forward to working alongside your children with both of these.
Yours sincerely,
Jaimee Pollock
