This afternoon for Science time we had a tricky task to consolidate our learning about the Monarch Butterfly Life Cycle. We had to sequence the pictures of the monarch life cycle into order from the first thing that occurs to the fourth thing that occurs - which is when the caterpillar becomes a Monarch Butterfly. The children in Room 19 are fascinated with the swan plants in our class and how caterpillars turn into Monarch Butterflies. Stay tuned as we learn even more.

PE - We are learning how to throw and catch
This afternoon Room 19 went outside for PE. We were learning how to throw under arm throws and catch with two hands. We had so much fun practising our throws by ourself and with our friends.
Exploring Arahoe
Today we went exploring around Arahoe School, while exploring the school we played a listening game where we had to listen to all the noises we could hear around us then compare with a friend what they heard. While exploring we discovered the outdoor classroom at the bottom of the field. While we were there we found lots of cicada shells which is Room 19s favourite thing to collect at the moment.

Writing - Chalk Boards
Today one of the writing groups were very busy learning how to form two of the Casey shapes from the story we are reading. We were learning how to form a tall stick and a short stick. Both of these "shapes" are in a large amount of letters that we write such as the letter T, it has a tall stick and a twig. The children were learning the correct place to starting writing their shape - from the top down and that their shape needed to sit on the line, not under and not above. As the photos show the tall stick goes all the way down to the line and the short stick sits underneath the broken branch to the line. A short stick features in a lot of letters such as a,r,n and m.
Once mastered this tricky concept of the right place for our shapes to be the beams on the children's faces say it all. If you would like to know more about the writing program at Arahoe Primary please click on the Writing page tab at the top of the blog. This will give you a detailed description of what the writing program is about.
I wonder what shape we will learn tomorrow....

Science - Learing about the life cycle of a Monarch Butterfly
In Room 19 we have two swan plants. This afternoon we looked closely at the swan plant, we observed how the caterpillars moved, the size and how many caterpillars were on each swan plant and looked for the tiny black eggs. After examining the swan plants we moved around the room like caterpillars and then learnt what happens next once the caterpillar is really large.... stay tuned as we continue on this learning journey. We watched the video's below to help with our learning. Watch with your child at home and let them tell you what they have learnt.
Letter of the Day
Today we learnt all about the letter Hh. We learnt what sound it makes, how to write it and words that start with H. We made Hannah, Harry and Hayley the hairy horse and used pipe cleaners to make the letter H.
