Spring Fair October 31st

 Good morning parents,

We can not believe it is the end of term three. With the term now at the end we would like to notify you of an event that will be taking place at Arahoe School on Saturday the 31st of October - Arahoe Spring Fair. This is in week 4.

Each class has to be in charge of a stall at the fair and this year E-Learning will be running an Environmentally focussed stall called " Wash Against Waste".

The Wash Against Waste trailer is a washing booth where we will be washing all the dishes used from the food stalls at the fair and then circulating them back to the food stalls. Last year we had a lot of plastic food containers used to serve food and as you can imagine all of these plastic containers went straight into landfill!

Arahoe is a waste wise school  and we would love your help on the day for an hour.

On the first week back of Term 4 we will have a sign up sheet on our door for you to put your name down to help. The truck will be up and running from 11am - 2pm. We require four helpers per hour and the first week back we will have a meeting to let you know a little bit more about the Wash Against Waste Trailer. Did you know that the Wash Against Waste trailer is the only one in New Zealand?

If you would like to see it in action it is at the New Lynn Night Markets every Thursday and is from the ECO matters house in New Lynn.

Stay tuned for the meeting information and pop the school fair date in your diary!

Thanks, Dana and Jaimee.

Eid

One of the students in our class brought in cake pops for the class today to celebrate Eid.

Just a little info about Eid-al-adha, it's the second of 2 main Muslim celebrations and it marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. We celebrate it by doing Eid prayers first thing in the morning then gather with family and friends for brunch or lunch. The kids get to wear new clothes and receive gifts/money from everyone as a token of love.

A main act done for Eid is the sacrifice of an animal, either a sheep or a cow or the like. This is to remember those close to us (family and friends) and more importantly the poor and needy. One-third of the meat is donated to friends and family and another third is given to the poor and needy.

We really enjoyed learning about another cultural tradition and thought the cake pops were delicious.

We knew it was successful when we were able to
-work as a team
-offer my suggestions
-remember my part
-tell a story using the elements of music we have learnt - beat, rhythm, tempo, pitch, dynamics)

More fabulous writing

We are so proud of each student in the class and how far they have come on their writing journey. All the students in the class are able to write indepdently and write most words they need, form letters correctly and write one or two sentences. Fantastic achievement!! Today one writing group wrote recounts telling the reader something special they do with their family. The students had to include who, what and when in their story. Well done on your great work.

Recount writing

Today the rocket handwriting group were writing recounts of their weekend. As a group we came up with success criterias for our writing. Success criterias are when we know what we have to do to be successfully with our story writing. The rockets came up with what we should do, once the children finished their writing they checked their work against our criteria. All the children were successful! Huge acheievement.

Hieroglypic Pendants

The students of E-Learning have developed a keen interest and fascination with Ancient Egyptian history this year. It all started when one of the students brought in a miniature sarcophagus ( Egyptian tomb) to show the class. Their captivation continued when they made the discovery that the ancient Egyptian's used a different system of writing than us called hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics involved a series of "picture" words, where each letter of the alphabet was illustrated by a symbol/picture. Each student designed and hand crafted the shape of their clay pendant. Once they were happy with the shape they then carved the hieroglyphic symbol to represent the first letter of their name. The students wanted to make a piece of art that they could interact with and wear each day. They took great delight and pride in the construction of their unique pendants.   Each student has hand plaited a rope necklace that the pendant will be displayed on.

The money raised from selling the children's art will go towards " project outdoors" updating the schools gardens and playing areas for the students. For more information and to view your child's art work please click on the link below.  Art that is not purchased by families will remain at school as school property. If you would like to buy your child's pendant please pay at the office or in class.

Hand Foot and Mouth

Good afternoon parents,

We would like to inform you that we have had an out break of Hand, Foot and Mouth within the classroom. Once infection with the HFMD virus has occurred, the time until symptoms appear (incubation period) is usually between three and six days.

HFMD is most contagious in the first week after symptoms appear or while there is fluid in the affected child’s blisters. However, the virus can remain present in the faeces for several weeks.

Initial symptoms of HFMD often appear suddenly and include a mild fever and sore throat. A headache may also be present. One to two days later the following symptoms develop:

  • Painful ulcer-like blisters in the mouth - particularly on the lining of cheeks, roof of the mouth, gums and tongue.
  • A rash with small fluid-filled blisters on the pads of the fingers and palms of the hands and/or soles of the feet.  Occasionally the rash and blisters appear on the buttocks.
In addition, children are often tired and irritable. They may also refuse food and fluids due to the painful blisters in the mouth. Hand Foot and Mouth

For more information on HFM please visit the website below.

If your child has any symptom's please take them to the doctor.

Warriors in training

Whakapapa/ Atuatanga
Warrior Training

Today for Maori we were learning a new moving game that involved listening to a Maori call and move our bodies.

We had to
  • move our bodies in time with a peer
  • E peke/ jump in time with a peer
  • Say whano as I jump.
We knew we were successful learning the game when
  • I can work together to play the game
  • I can take part in the game Whakapapa/ Atuatanga
  • I can jump in time with my peer
  • I can call out whano and jump at the same time

This game traditionally used for Toa (warrior) training. Leg speed and explosive power were essential for dodging strikes from attackers or moving into position to attack an opponent. We had to jump and move our feet into four different foot positions.

We played the game and then had a completion, well done to one of our students who was the ultimate warrior. Try this game at home it is a lot of fun.
