One of the students in our class brought in cake pops for the class today to celebrate Eid.
Just a little info about Eid-al-adha, it's the second of 2 main Muslim celebrations and it marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. We celebrate it by doing Eid prayers first thing in the morning then gather with family and friends for brunch or lunch. The kids get to wear new clothes and receive gifts/money from everyone as a token of love.
A main act done for Eid is the sacrifice of an animal, either a sheep or a cow or the like. This is to remember those close to us (family and friends) and more importantly the poor and needy. One-third of the meat is donated to friends and family and another third is given to the poor and needy.
We really enjoyed learning about another cultural tradition and thought the cake pops were delicious.
